Public Accuracy Test
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Public Accuracy Test for the August 4, 2020 Election has been scheduled for July 22, 2020 at 11 A.M. at the Township Office, 47240 Green Acres Road, Houghton, MI 49931.
The Public Accuracy Test is conducted to determine that the program and the computer being used to tabulate the results of the election, counts the votes in the manner prescribed by the law.

Summer 2020 Property Tax Information
 Treasurer contact info: 906-482-4310 or
 Property tax hours: all tax questions should be directed via phone or email to the Treasurerís office. Messages will be checked and emails will be replied to as the treasurer and deputy treasurer process payments in the office.
 No in-person tax collection/tax meetings: Due to Covid-19 concerns, in-person appointments must be made by calling or emailing the treasurer. There will be no in-person tax collection or payments. The treasurer is in the office from 9am to 3pm on Monday 9/14/2020.
 Summer Tax Due Dates: taxes must be received on or before September 14 to avoid penalty.
 Tax bill mailing: tax bills are printed and mailed during the first two weeks in July. If you do not receive your bill by July 21, please contact the Treasurerís office and request a new one.
 Didnít get your bill? If you do not receive your property tax bill by the 3rd/4th weeks of July, please call or email the Treasurerís office, to request another copy and verify your address*.
 Payment Forms: check, money order, credit card (through an outside processor with a 2.7% fee), or cash with exact change are accepted for payments. Because collection is not in person, change cannot be made.
 Send payments to: Portage Township Office at 47240 Green Acres Rd, Houghton, MI 49931 attn: Treasurer, dropped 24 hours/day in our payment drop box, or made online at https:/ with credit card, or by calling 844-278-0929 for credit card payments.
 Receipts: can be emailed for free, please include email address, or a self-addressed-stamped-envelope, if you would like a receipt.
 Automatic payments: To sign up via ACH prior to August 15, please 906-482-4310, or email
 Partial payments: Partial payments are accepted at any time through February 28 (the closing date for all 2020 taxes, both Summer and Winter).

Absentee Voter Applications
Attention Portage Township Residents: The Township will be mailing out Absentee Ballot Applications early next week to those voters on our permanent absentee voter list. The State of Michigan is sending out applications to all voters NOT on the permanent list. Every registered voter will receive an application to receive a ballot for the August and November Election.

There is a possibility of residents receiving more than one application, sometimes political parties also send these out.

Consolidation of Precincts
Attention residents: The Township board voted to consolidate precincts 1 and 2: anyone who voted at precinct 1 will now vote at precinct 2 (Hurontown fire hall). This move was recommended by the state and the board felt itís a good use of resources (the township office will now remain open on election day). If you voted at the Township office, you will receive a new voter ID card reflecting your polling location change. If you have any questions or concerns, please call our office at 482-4310 or stop in.

Property Tax Payment/Explainations
Property taxes can be paid in person from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M., Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The Deputy-Treasurer will be present during those times to answer any explicit questions about your property tax bill.

If there is no questions concerning your tax bill - Payment can be made to the Twp. Staff Monday thru Thursday, 9:00 A.M to 3:00 P.M. or payment can be placed in the drop box after hours.
